Knightdale UMC

Solution

Knightdale United Methodist Church, formerly located on Main Avenue in the small town of Knightdale, North Carolina, has increased in membership over the last several years and the Church has faith that it will continue to grow. As the city limits of Raleigh expanded, so did the interstate systems, many businesses and the amount of people living towards the outer edge of the city. This growth has reached the city limits of Knightdale and has rapidly increased the amount of traffic and habitation in what once was a town that consisted of a couple of main roads & a few stop lights. Knightdale United Methodist Church purchased a new site and had a vision of building a new facility that would continue to accommodate the growing Christian community around them. Our design firm began working with the Church in 1994 to create a Master Plan that would be implemented into several different phases. The first phase to be constructed included a multi-purpose worship area, several classrooms, a church administrative wing, and the addition of various other rooms that would be used by the community. Other phases designed for the master plan include extra education space to eventually create a child care facility, a larger administrative wing, as well as a full time sanctuary and worship space. One of the unique details included in the design was a multi- purpose room equipped with technology and beautiful architectural details for worship time. The room would also be used for family dinners, wedding receptions, and various other weekly church activities. When Jenkins Architecture designed this building, the most important consideration was to create several natural gathering spaces throughout the facility for the church members. We strongly believe that ministry happens not only on Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary but throughout the daily movement & in small group conversation. Several spaces throughout this facility that will encourage conversation are the Narthex, a state of the art coffee bar, and multiple outdoor courtyards. This project is a great example of how design affects the daily life of the individuals that interact within the space. We feel privileged to be a part of strengthening & encouraging growth within the Knightdale community
